OBD-II fault code

P22BD: O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Low (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

What it means

O2 reference voltage on bank 2 sensor 2 below lower plausibility — short to ground. A drifted or sluggish lambda sensor lets the mixture run lean or rich without correction — fuel economy and emissions suffer immediately.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The wide-band oxygen sensor after the Bank 2 catalytic converter uses a reference-voltage line to establish the pumping cell's electrical midpoint. The engine control module sets P22BD when the Bank 2 Sensor 2 reference circuit falls below its expected range; the code alone does not prove the cause is a short to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check Bank 2 Sensor 2 live data and related codes to establish when the low reference reading appears.
  2. Inspect the reference wire and sensor connector for chafing, corrosion, loose or pushed-back pins, and damage where the harness runs by the exhaust.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to test the reference circuit for a short to ground and check connector contact quality.
  4. With the sensor disconnected as directed by service information, test the harness for continuity and shorts to ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the harness is sound, test the sensor's reference circuit and the control-module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a reference wire shorted to ground or damaged by chafing.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector pins and restore secure terminal contact.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor if its internal reference circuit fails testing.
  • Repair the control module only if its output fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, cautious driving to arrange diagnosis is generally reasonable, but emissions monitoring may be affected and fuel consumption can rise. Avoid extended driving if rough running or hesitation develops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
