What it means
The water-in-fuel sensor at the diesel fuel filter reads below lower plausibility — short to ground. The sensor warns the driver to drain the filter when condensate accumulates.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The water-in-fuel sensor at the diesel filter signals when accumulated water needs to be drained. P2266 sets when the module sees the Sensor A circuit signal below its expected range, which can result from a short to ground, poor connector contact, or damaged wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may illuminate
- Water-in-fuel warning may appear incorrectly or fail to appear
- Usually no noticeable change in driving
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live circuit status to confirm that the water-in-fuel Sensor A signal is low when P2266 is active.
- Inspect the filter sensor connector and harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, moisture, or a loose terminal.
- Check whether moving the harness changes the low reading, which can help identify an intermittent ground contact.
- Test the Sensor A signal wire for a short to ground and check connector continuity using the wiring diagram.
- Test the sensor and its reference or return circuits according to the manufacturer's procedure before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Repair a Sensor A signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
- Replace chafed or damaged harness wiring at the fuel filter.
- Replace the water-in-fuel sensor if circuit checks show the sensor itself is pulling the signal low.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may run normally, but the water-in-fuel warning may be unreliable and fail to alert you to water that can damage injection components. Repair the circuit promptly and do not ignore a water warning.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
