OBD-II fault code

P223D: O2 Sensor Pumping Current Range/Performance (Bank 2)

What it means

The pumping current of the wide-band O2 sensor on bank 2 is in electrical range but plausibility check fails. Wide-band sensors use a pumping cell that adjusts oxygen concentration in a reference chamber; the current required is proportional to lambda.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 wide-band oxygen sensor uses a pumping cell to measure exhaust mixture, and its current helps the engine control module calculate lambda for fuel control. P223D means the Bank 2 pumping-current reading is within electrical limits but fails the expected response or plausibility check.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pumping cell aged
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live lambda data for Bank 2, checking when the fault occurs and how the reading changes with load.
  2. Inspect Bank 2 sensor wiring, connector, and mounting for damage, looseness, contamination, and exhaust leaks near the sensor.
  3. Check for Bank 2 misfires, fuel-trim imbalance, or intake and exhaust leaks that could make its reading implausible.
  4. Compare Bank 2 sensor response with Bank 1 under similar conditions, where the vehicle provides both banks and scan data.
  5. If other causes are absent, test the Bank 2 sensor pumping cell and calibration using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak or intake leak affecting Bank 2 readings.
  • Tighten the Bank 2 sensor mounting and repair damaged wiring or connector contacts.
  • Correct a Bank 2 misfire or fueling problem causing an abnormal mixture.
  • Replace the Bank 2 wide-band sensor if testing confirms pumping-cell wear or failure.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle drive is usually possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary travel. Incorrect Bank 2 mixture feedback can increase fuel consumption and emissions, and rough running needs prompt attention.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
