OBD-II fault code

P223C: O2 Sensor Pumping Current Range/Performance (Bank 1)

What it means

The pumping current of the wide-band O2 sensor on bank 1 is in electrical range but plausibility check fails. Wide-band sensors use a pumping cell that adjusts oxygen concentration in a reference chamber; the current required is proportional to lambda.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The wide-band oxygen sensor on Bank 1 measures exhaust mixture using a pumping cell, and the engine control module uses its current to estimate lambda for fuel control. P223C means the Bank 1 pumping-current circuit is electrically in range, but the response does not behave as the module expects.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pumping cell aged
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live lambda or oxygen-sensor data for Bank 1 to see the operating conditions and whether the reading responds to changes in engine load.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 sensor connector, wiring, and mounting for damage, looseness, contamination, or exhaust leaks that could damp or distort the response.
  3. Check for misfire, fuel-trim, or intake and exhaust leaks that could make the Bank 1 sensor's reported mixture implausible.
  4. Compare Bank 1 sensor response with the other bank under similar conditions, if the vehicle has one, using scan data.
  5. If external causes are ruled out, test the Bank 1 pumping cell and sensor calibration using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak or intake leak affecting Bank 1 mixture readings.
  • Secure the Bank 1 sensor if it is loose and repair damaged wiring or connector contacts.
  • Correct an engine misfire or fueling fault that is skewing the sensor response.
  • Replace the Bank 1 wide-band sensor if testing confirms its pumping cell has aged or failed.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid long trips and hard acceleration. The module may misjudge the Bank 1 mixture, worsening fuel consumption and emissions; address rough running promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
