OBD-II fault code

P2232: O2 Sensor Signal Circuit Shorted to Heater Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

What it means

The oxygen sensor signal circuit is shorted to its heater circuit on Bank 1 Sensor 2. This electrical fault can make the sensor reading unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 Sensor 2 is the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter; it monitors exhaust oxygen mainly to help assess catalyst operation. P2232 means its signal circuit is shorted to its heater circuit, making the downstream reading unreliable and potentially affecting emissions monitoring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to the sensor heater wire
  2. Melted or damaged sensor wiring
  3. Damaged or contaminated connector
  4. Internal oxygen sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review Bank 1 Sensor 2 live data and related catalyst-monitor information for an implausible or disrupted reading.
  2. With the exhaust cool, inspect the downstream sensor's wiring and connector for melted insulation, chafing, corrosion, contamination, or water entry.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to identify Bank 1 Sensor 2's signal and heater wires and check for an unintended connection between them.
  4. Test the harness and connector separately from the sensor to determine whether the short is in the wiring or inside the sensor.
  5. If those tests pass, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to check the controller input circuit.

Common fixes

  • Repair melted or chafed Bank 1 Sensor 2 wiring.
  • Clean or repair corroded or contaminated connector terminals.
  • Replace Bank 1 Sensor 2 if testing confirms an internal signal-to-heater short.
  • Repair a controller input fault only if circuit tests identify it.

Can I keep driving?

A short trip is generally possible if the engine runs normally, but arrange repair soon because emissions monitoring may be impaired and the vehicle may fail an emissions test. Stop if rough running or power loss becomes significant.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
