What it means
Same condition as P0141 but on the downstream sensor of bank 2. The sensor heater warms the element to operating temperature (~600 °C); without it the lambda sensor stays inactive in closed loop and the ECM cannot trim mixture.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Bank 2 Sensor 2 is the downstream oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter on bank 2, and its built-in heater helps it become active sooner after a cold start. P0161 sets when the ECU detects a malfunction in that sensor's heater circuit, delaying the sensor's readiness for monitoring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Heater element open or worn
- Blown heater circuit fuse
- Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
- Faulty oxygen sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on after several drive cycles
- Slightly increased fuel consumption during cold start
- Delayed entry into closed-loop fuel control
- Failed emissions inspection (lambda readiness)
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check whether P0161 occurs after a cold start or during the heater monitor.
- Inspect the Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector and nearby wiring for exhaust heat damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Check the heater-circuit fuse and power supply where applicable.
- Test the sensor heater element and its ground and control wiring against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and supply are sound, confirm the heater fault at Bank 2 Sensor 2 before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector if contact is poor.
- Repair damaged heater wiring or a poor ground.
- Replace a failed heater-circuit fuse after finding the cause.
- Replace Bank 2 Sensor 2 if its heater element is open or otherwise fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive with this fault, but the downstream sensor may take longer to become ready and emissions checks may not complete. Limit repeated short cold-start trips and fix it before an emissions inspection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
