OBD-II fault code

P2194: System Too Rich at Higher Load (Bank 2)

What it means

The engine control module detects a rich air-fuel mixture on bank 2 at higher engine load. The code identifies the operating condition; it does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module monitors oxygen-sensor feedback and fuel trims for bank 2, the side opposite bank 1. P2194 sets when the mixture is detected as too rich on bank 2 at higher engine load, indicating excess fuel relative to air under demand rather than a rich condition limited to idle.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pressure too high
  2. MAF reads low under load

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration
  • Smell of unburned fuel, fouled spark plugs

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 fuel trims at idle and under load to confirm when the rich condition appears.
  2. Check for related fuel-pressure, mass-airflow, injector, and oxygen-sensor codes and inspect bank 2 plugs and exhaust for soot or fuel odor.
  3. Monitor mass-airflow data during a controlled load increase and compare it with engine operation and the manufacturer's expected data.
  4. Measure fuel pressure under the manufacturer's procedure to check for pressure that is too high under load.
  5. Test bank 2 injectors for leakage or excessive delivery if fuel pressure and airflow measurements do not explain the rich reading.

Common fixes

  • Correct a fuel-pressure control fault confirmed to be causing excessive pressure.
  • Repair or replace a leaking bank 2 injector identified by testing.
  • Clean or replace a mass-airflow sensor only if its readings are confirmed inaccurate under load.
  • Repair bank 2 oxygen-sensor wiring or connections if they are causing a false rich indication.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and towing while this code is active; a rich mixture can cause black smoke, fuel odor, and catalytic-converter damage. If the check-engine light flashes or the engine runs poorly, stop driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
