OBD-II fault code

P2191: System Too Lean at Higher Load (Bank 1)

What it means

The engine control module detects a lean air-fuel mixture on bank 1 at higher engine load. The code identifies the operating condition; it does not by itself establish a fuel-supply restriction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module estimates the air-fuel mixture on bank 1 from oxygen-sensor feedback and fuel trims. P2191 sets when bank 1 is detected as too lean at higher engine load, when the engine needs more fuel; the code can reflect fuel delivery, airflow measurement, or another cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pump weak under load
  2. Fuel filter clogged
  3. MAF reads low at high airflow

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle, possible stalling
  • Hesitation or hard cold start
  • Power loss under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 fuel trims at idle and under load to confirm the lean condition appears as engine demand rises.
  2. Check for related fuel-pressure, mass-airflow, intake-leak, and oxygen-sensor codes before replacing parts.
  3. Inspect the intake ducting and bank 1 air path for loose connections or leaks that could affect the measured airflow.
  4. Monitor mass-airflow data during a controlled load increase and check whether readings rise plausibly with engine airflow.
  5. Measure fuel pressure and delivery under load using the manufacturer's procedure to check for a weak pump or restricted filter.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or leaking intake connection affecting airflow measurement.
  • Replace a clogged fuel filter if testing confirms restricted delivery.
  • Repair or replace a weak fuel pump if pressure or flow falls short of the manufacturer's specification under load.
  • Clean or replace a faulty mass-airflow sensor only after confirming its readings are inaccurate.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and steep climbs because the lean condition appears when bank 1 is under higher load and can cause hesitation or power loss. If the engine misfires, overheats, or stalls, stop driving and address it promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
