What it means
The second coolant temperature sensor reports a voltage below the lower threshold — typically a short to ground or a sensor with very low resistance.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Engine coolant temperature sensor 2 supplies a second temperature signal to the control module, though its position and purpose depend on the vehicle. P2186 identifies an intermittent or erratic sensor 2 circuit signal, so the reported temperature may jump or drop out as a sensor, connector, or wiring fault comes and goes.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to ground
- Sensor element shorted
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
- Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
- Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph sensor 2 live data to identify sudden jumps or dropouts relative to sensor 1.
- Inspect sensor 2's connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or damage near hot and moving parts.
- With the engine running and live data visible, gently flex the sensor 2 harness and connector to reproduce an intermittent fault.
- Check sensor 2 circuit continuity and connector contact quality while moving the harness, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test sensor 2 against the manufacturer's specification if the wiring remains sound and the signal still glitches.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor 2 connector or terminal.
- Clean corroded contacts and repair damaged sensor 2 wiring.
- Replace sensor 2 if testing confirms an intermittent internal fault.
- Clear the code and verify the sensor 2 signal remains stable through warm-up and a harness movement check.
Can I keep driving?
If the fan operation or temperature reading becomes unreliable, keep trips short and monitor for overheating; stop safely if temperature rises abnormally. An intermittent sensor 2 signal can make cooling control unpredictable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
