OBD-II fault code

P2184: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Low

What it means

The control module monitors the signal from engine coolant temperature sensor 2. It sets this code when the circuit signal is below the calibrated range; the code identifies the signal condition, not necessarily a failed sensor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Engine coolant temperature sensor 2 sends a signal to the control module, which uses it as a second coolant-temperature input; its location and role vary by vehicle. P2184 sets when the sensor 2 circuit signal is below the calibrated range, which can result from a short to ground or a connection fault rather than a failed sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
  • Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
  • Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for sensor 2 to see whether its reading is implausibly low compared with sensor 1 and ambient temperature.
  2. Inspect sensor 2's connector and nearby harness for chafing, exposed wire, corrosion, or a terminal contacting ground.
  3. Move the harness gently while watching live data to look for a signal that changes when the wiring is disturbed.
  4. Test the sensor 2 signal wire for a short to ground and check connector contact quality using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test sensor 2 against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed sensor 2 wiring that is shorting to ground.
  • Clean corroded connector pins and restore a secure connection.
  • Replace sensor 2 if it fails the manufacturer's electrical or temperature-response checks.
  • Clear the code and confirm the signal is plausible from cold start through warm-up.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the cooling fan fails to operate correctly or temperature control seems abnormal, and stop if the engine overheats. A low sensor 2 signal can mislead cooling control and affect cold-start operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
