OBD-II fault code

P2180: System Too Rich Off Idle Bank 2

What it means

The engine control module evaluates fuel mixture using oxygen-sensor feedback and other engine data. It sets this code when bank 2 is richer than the calibrated limit during off-idle operation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 is the cylinder bank opposite the one containing cylinder 1. During off-idle operation, the engine control module uses oxygen-sensor feedback and other engine data to assess that bank's mixture. P2180 sets when bank 2 is richer than the module's calibrated limit in those conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Leaking injector on bank 2
  2. Excessive fuel pressure

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration
  • Smell of unburned fuel, fouled spark plugs

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 fuel trims at idle and off idle to confirm the operating condition.
  2. Compare bank 2 data with bank 1 and inspect bank 2 spark plugs for soot or fuel fouling to see whether the rich condition is localised.
  3. Inspect bank 2 injectors and wiring for leakage or damage, and check whether an injector continues to leak after shutdown.
  4. Measure fuel pressure under the manufacturer's specified conditions because excessive pressure can enrich bank 2.
  5. Check related oxygen-sensor and misfire codes before replacing parts, and verify that bank 2 feedback responds plausibly as engine conditions change.

Common fixes

  • Repair a leaking injector on bank 2.
  • Repair the confirmed fuel-pressure control fault causing excessive pressure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connections affecting bank 2 mixture feedback.
  • Replace a fouled spark plug after correcting the cause of the rich mixture.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and there is no heavy smoke, drive only as needed and avoid hard acceleration. Continued richness can foul plugs, waste fuel, and damage the catalytic converter; stop if misfiring becomes severe or smoke is heavy.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
