What it means
The engine control module evaluates fuel mixture using oxygen-sensor feedback and other engine data. It sets this code when bank 1 is richer than the calibrated limit during off-idle operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Bank 1 is the cylinder bank that contains cylinder 1. During off-idle operation, the engine control module compares oxygen-sensor feedback and other engine data with its fuel-trim limits. P2178 sets when that bank is running richer than the module allows in those conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Leaking fuel injector
- Excessive fuel pressure
- Stuck-open purge valve
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration
- Smell of unburned fuel, fouled spark plugs
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 fuel trims at idle and off idle, since the code is specific to off-idle enrichment.
- Check for other fuel or sensor codes and inspect bank 1 spark plugs for soot or fuel fouling to help identify whether the rich condition affects particular cylinders.
- Inspect bank 1 injectors and their wiring for signs of leakage or damage, and check whether an injector continues to leak after shutdown.
- Measure fuel pressure under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, because excessive pressure can enrich bank 1.
- Check whether the purge valve flows when it should be closed and inspect its hoses for damage that could admit excess fuel vapour.
Common fixes
- Repair a leaking injector on bank 1.
- Replace a purge valve that leaks when commanded closed.
- Repair a damaged injector connector or wiring.
- Correct excessive fuel pressure by repairing the identified pressure-control fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly and there is no heavy smoke, drive only as needed and avoid hard acceleration. Persistent richness can foul spark plugs, increase fuel use, and damage the catalytic converter; stop if the engine misfires badly or exhaust smoke is heavy.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
