OBD-II fault code

P2174: Throttle Actuator Control System - Sudden Low Air Flow Detected

What it means

The throttle actuator control system has detected a sudden low airflow condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The throttle actuator system controls the throttle plate and checks whether measured airflow matches the commanded throttle and operating conditions. P2174 is set when airflow suddenly falls below the expected level, which can happen if the intake becomes obstructed or the throttle plate or actuator sticks.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intake air path suddenly restricted or obstructed
  2. Throttle plate or actuator sticking
  3. Collapsed or blocked intake duct
  4. Faulty airflow sensor or wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded throttle, actual throttle position, and airflow readings to see what changed at the time of the sudden drop.
  2. Inspect the air filter, intake opening, and ducting for a blocked or collapsed section, loose debris, or a hose pinched shut.
  3. Check the throttle body for a plate that sticks or fails to follow the commanded position, without forcing the electronic throttle plate.
  4. Inspect the MAF and related sensor connectors and wiring for loose plugs, damage, or intermittent readings while monitoring live data.
  5. If the intake path is clear, test the throttle actuator and airflow sensor circuits according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Common fixes

  • Remove an obstruction from the intake opening or replace a blocked air filter.
  • Replace a collapsed or damaged intake duct.
  • Repair loose or damaged airflow-sensor wiring or connectors.
  • Clean or replace a confirmed sticking throttle body, actuator, or faulty sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced throttle response or limp mode can make merging and climbing difficult, so avoid fast traffic and situations requiring strong acceleration. If power drops suddenly, pull over safely rather than continuing in traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
