OBD-II fault code

P2173: Throttle Actuator Control System - High Air Flow Detected

What it means

The module detects more airflow than expected through the throttle actuator control system. It sets the code when measured airflow is above the calibrated amount for the operating conditions, often indicating an air leak or throttle control problem.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The throttle actuator system adjusts the throttle plate and checks airflow against the amount expected for the engine’s operating conditions. P2173 is set when airflow is higher than expected, which can result from an intake leak, a throttle plate that does not close as commanded, or an inaccurate airflow or pressure signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intake vacuum leak
  2. Throttle body stuck open or dirty
  3. Damaged intake duct or hose
  4. Faulty airflow or pressure sensor
  5. Throttle actuator or wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • High or unstable idle
  • Hesitation
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded throttle angle, actual throttle position, MAF, and manifold-pressure readings to identify which signal first appears abnormal.
  2. Inspect intake ducts and vacuum hoses for splits, loose joints, or disconnected hoses that can admit unmetered air.
  3. Check the throttle plate and throttle body for sticking, deposits, or visible damage that could keep the plate more open than commanded.
  4. Inspect airflow and pressure sensor connectors and wiring, then check live data for readings that do not respond plausibly to throttle changes.
  5. If no leak or sticking part is found, test the throttle actuator and sensor circuits against the manufacturer’s specifications.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose intake hose or tighten a loose duct connection.
  • Repair a split intake duct or vacuum hose.
  • Clean the throttle body if deposits are preventing smooth movement, following the vehicle’s service procedure.
  • Repair damaged sensor or actuator wiring, or replace a component confirmed faulty by testing.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine idles unusually high or power is reduced, avoid high-speed driving and situations that require quick acceleration until the cause is found. Stop if unstable idle or poor throttle response makes the vehicle unsafe to control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
