P214C: SCR NOx Catalyst Outlet Temperature Too High

What it means

SCR NOx Catalyst Outlet Temperature Too High: the component is overheating, typically from extended load or slip.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The SCR catalyst reduces nitrogen oxides, and an outlet temperature sensor measures exhaust heat after the catalyst. This code sets when the reported outlet temperature exceeds its limit outside the regeneration condition covered by the related code, potentially indicating excessive heat or an inaccurate sensor signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. SCR catalyst exposed to sustained excessive exhaust temperature
  2. Upstream regeneration or fuel dosing produced excess heat
  3. Faulty temperature sensor or inaccurate reading
  4. Exhaust flow restriction

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check SCR, exhaust-temperature, particulate-filter, and fuel-dosing codes to see the load and regeneration state when the outlet temperature rose.
  2. Compare live SCR outlet temperature with inlet and other exhaust-temperature readings to see whether the value is plausible and localized to the outlet sensor.
  3. Inspect the outlet temperature sensor, connector, and wiring for heat damage, loose terminals, corrosion, or exhaust contamination.
  4. Check for exhaust leaks or restrictions and compare inlet versus outlet behavior under the manufacturer’s specified conditions.
  5. If the temperature rise is real, investigate upstream regeneration or dosing operation using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose outlet temperature sensor wiring and connector pins.
  • Replace the outlet temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer’s checks.
  • Correct upstream regeneration or fuel-dosing faults that produce excessive exhaust heat.
  • Repair a confirmed exhaust restriction or leak affecting flow.

Can I keep driving?

Limit heavy-load driving until the cause is found because sustained high outlet temperature can damage the SCR catalyst. If the vehicle loses power or displays escalating emissions warnings, arrange prompt service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
