What it means
SCR NOx Catalyst Inlet Temperature Too High During Particulate Filter Regeneration: the component is overheating, typically from extended load or slip.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The SCR catalyst reduces nitrogen oxides in diesel exhaust, and its inlet temperature sensor monitors exhaust heat entering the catalyst. This code sets when that inlet temperature exceeds its limit during particulate-filter regeneration, when extra exhaust heat is deliberately produced to burn soot.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive hydrocarbon dosing during particulate-filter regeneration
- Regeneration control fault causing excessive exhaust heat
- Faulty temperature sensor or inaccurate reading
- Exhaust flow restriction
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
- Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and regeneration status, then check particulate-filter, SCR, temperature-sensor, and dosing codes for the conditions present when the threshold was exceeded.
- Watch live inlet temperature and regeneration data to confirm that the high reading occurs during regeneration and is plausible against other exhaust-temperature sensors.
- Inspect the SCR inlet temperature sensor and its wiring for heat damage, poor connections, or contamination that could distort the reading.
- Check for signs of excessive hydrocarbon dosing or a regeneration control fault using available scan data and the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Inspect the exhaust path for restriction or damage that could trap heat, and test suspected components to the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged inlet temperature sensor wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace the inlet temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer’s checks.
- Correct excessive fuel dosing or a particulate-filter regeneration control fault.
- Repair a confirmed exhaust restriction.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy-load driving while regeneration is producing excessive temperatures; continued overheating can damage the SCR catalyst and related exhaust components. Seek prompt diagnosis if warnings persist or the vehicle enters a reduced-power mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
