OBD-II fault code

P212B: Throttle Position Sensor/Switch G Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

TPS G reads in range but plausibility check fails — value sticks, lags, or does not match the commanded throttle position.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Throttle position channel G measures throttle angle for the electronic throttle control system. P212B sets when the G signal is electrically present but its movement, timing, or relationship to commanded throttle position falls outside the module's acceptable range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor wiper sticks
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph commanded throttle angle against the G-channel reading to confirm where they stop tracking together.
  2. Inspect the G sensor connector and mounting for looseness, contamination, or movement that could damp or distort the signal.
  3. Move the throttle through its operating range with a scan tool and look for G-channel readings that stick, lag, or jump while other channels respond normally.
  4. Check the G-channel wiring and terminals for intermittent resistance or poor contact, especially where the harness flexes.
  5. If the circuit is sound, assess the sensor track and throttle mechanism for sticking or wear against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the loose G sensor or throttle body mounting if movement is affecting the reading.
  • Clean or repair poor G-channel connector contacts.
  • Repair damaged or high-resistance wiring in the G circuit.
  • Replace the throttle position sensor or throttle body if G remains slow or inconsistent with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

The throttle may hesitate or respond unevenly, and reduced-power mode is possible. Avoid hard acceleration and busy traffic until diagnosed, since sticking or lagging throttle feedback can make speed control less predictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
