OBD-II fault code

P2110: Throttle Actuator Control System — Forced Limited RPM

What it means

The TAC monitor caps engine speed at a fixed limp-home rpm because it can no longer trust the throttle response. Driver may notice a hard rev limit well below redline.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The throttle actuator control system adjusts the throttle in response to driver demand and monitors whether the engine responds as expected. P2110 records that the system has imposed a limited engine speed because it detected a throttle control fault or response outside its expected range; this code describes the protective limit, so related codes help identify the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Underlying TAC fault triggers rpm cap
  2. Throttle response time out of spec

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and read all stored and pending throttle codes before clearing anything, since P2110 often accompanies the fault that triggered the limit.
  2. Compare commanded and actual throttle position and engine speed in live data to confirm how the limited-RPM condition appears.
  3. Inspect the throttle body, actuator connector, and harness for obstruction, loose pins, corrosion, or visible damage.
  4. Check the related throttle or pedal sensor signals and system voltage identified by the other codes, looking for dropouts or implausible readings.
  5. Test the implicated actuator, sensor circuits, and module inputs against the manufacturer's specification to find the fault that caused the cap.

Common fixes

  • Repair the specific wiring or connector fault identified in the related throttle codes.
  • Clean a throttle plate that is sticking from deposits, following the vehicle's service procedure.
  • Replace a faulty throttle actuator or position sensor only after testing confirms it.
  • Correct a verified system voltage or module input fault causing the throttle limit.

Can I keep driving?

The engine may be unable to accelerate beyond its protective limit, so avoid overtaking, steep climbs, and fast traffic. Drive only to a safe place if the response remains predictable; stop if power loss or surging makes control unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
