OBD-II fault code

P210F: Throttle Actuator B Control System - Forced Limited RPM

What it means

Throttle B control has detected an unsafe condition and forced an RPM limit. Common protective response when motor current, throttle position feedback, or supply voltage on the B path is out of spec.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Throttle actuator B operates a secondary throttle mechanism on engines that use a B throttle path. P210F indicates that the control system has detected an unsafe condition on that path and has deliberately limited engine speed; the trigger may involve motor current, position feedback, supply voltage, or a binding mechanism.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Throttle actuator B motor or mechanism binding
  2. Faulty throttle position feedback sensor
  3. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  4. Low system voltage or a faulty throttle driver

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data, read all related throttle codes, and compare commanded with actual B throttle position and available motor or system voltage data.
  2. Inspect the B throttle mechanism for visible obstruction or deposits, and check its connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. Check battery and charging system condition if the freeze-frame data or related codes indicate low system voltage.
  4. Use the scan tool's actuator test, if available, to observe whether throttle actuator B moves smoothly and whether its feedback follows the command.
  5. Test the B motor, position feedback, wiring, and control driver against the manufacturer's specification before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Remove an obstruction or clean deposits from the B throttle mechanism using the vehicle's approved procedure.
  • Repair a damaged B actuator connector or harness connection.
  • Correct a confirmed battery or charging system fault causing low system voltage.
  • Replace a binding or electrically faulty throttle actuator B assembly after testing identifies it.
  • Repair or replace a failed control driver only after its circuits and inputs are verified.

Can I keep driving?

The forced RPM limit means acceleration may be inadequate for traffic, so avoid high-speed roads and drive only far enough to reach a safe place if response is predictable. Stop if the engine surges, stalls, or cannot maintain a safe speed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
