What it means
SCR NOx Pre-Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2): the control module has detected this fault condition.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The SCR pre-catalyst is the upstream NOx treatment stage for bank 2. The module monitors NOx readings and operating conditions to estimate how effectively this stage reduces nitrogen oxides. This code sets when the bank 2 pre-catalyst's measured efficiency falls below the expected threshold.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pre-catalyst aged or contaminated
- Faulty NOx sensor or inaccurate sensor readings
- Exhaust leak affecting NOx measurements
- Reductant dosing or SCR system fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
- Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live NOx readings for bank 2 to identify when the pre-catalyst efficiency monitor failed.
- Check for related NOx-sensor, reductant, dosing, and exhaust-temperature codes that could affect the efficiency result.
- Inspect bank 2 exhaust joints around the pre-catalyst and sensors for leaks that could skew NOx measurements.
- Inspect the bank 2 NOx sensor connectors and wiring, then compare live sensor data for plausibility during stable operation.
- Verify reductant quality and dosing against the manufacturer's specification and assess pre-catalyst performance after sensor and leak checks.
Common fixes
- Repair an exhaust leak affecting the bank 2 pre-catalyst or NOx readings.
- Repair damaged wiring or connections at the affected bank 2 NOx sensor.
- Replace a NOx sensor confirmed to report inaccurate readings.
- Correct contaminated reductant or a dosing fault identified during testing.
- Replace the bank 2 SCR pre-catalyst if it fails an efficiency check after other causes are ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive gently if the vehicle has normal power, but emissions are elevated and an inspection may be failed. Arrange diagnosis soon, especially if a warning countdown or reduced-power message appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
