What it means
SCR NOx Pre-Catalyst Over Temperature (Bank 2): the component is overheating, typically from extended load or slip.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The SCR pre-catalyst is the upstream NOx treatment stage in bank 2's exhaust system. The module monitors this component's temperature using exhaust-temperature sensors or a calculated value. This code sets when bank 2 pre-catalyst temperature exceeds its permitted limit during the monitor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive exhaust temperature from an upstream regeneration event
- SCR catalyst overheating under sustained heavy load
- Faulty temperature sensor or implausible temperature reading
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
- Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live temperatures at the bank 2 pre-catalyst to establish the operating conditions when it overheated.
- Inspect the bank 2 pre-catalyst temperature sensor, wiring, and connector for heat damage or a loose or corroded connection.
- Compare its temperature reading with other exhaust sensors during operation to identify an implausible high reading.
- Look for DPF-regeneration, engine-temperature, reductant-dosing, and exhaust-restriction faults that could produce excess heat upstream.
- Inspect the bank 2 pre-catalyst and exhaust for restriction or heat damage, and verify reductant operation against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at the bank 2 pre-catalyst temperature sensor.
- Replace the temperature sensor if its reading is confirmed inaccurate.
- Correct abnormal upstream regeneration or another source of excessive exhaust temperature.
- Repair a restricted or leaking bank 2 exhaust section or a confirmed dosing fault.
- Replace the bank 2 SCR pre-catalyst if testing confirms heat damage.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or sustained high engine load until the bank 2 pre-catalyst temperature issue is diagnosed. Continued overheating can damage aftertreatment components; stop if power falls sharply or a severe exhaust warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
