What it means
Exhaust Aftertreatment Fuel Injector B Control Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command. This injector doses fuel into the exhaust to raise temperature for diesel particulate-filter regeneration; it does not fuel the engine.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Aftertreatment fuel injector B supplies fuel to the exhaust so the DPF can reach regeneration temperature; it does not supply fuel to the engine. P20D2 means the control module sees injector B’s response differing from its command, even though the circuit may remain electrically intact; restricted fuel delivery, nozzle deposits, sticking, or a poor connection can cause this mismatch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Partially clogged or carbon-fouled injector nozzle
- Restricted fuel supply to injector B
- Injector sticking or worn
- Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible exhaust smoke or fuel odor during regeneration
- DPF regeneration may be impaired
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare injector B command, exhaust temperatures, and regeneration status to identify the conditions when its response was out of range.
- Inspect injector B’s connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or heat damage.
- Check the injector B fuel supply path for restriction or leakage using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Inspect injector B’s nozzle area for carbon or deposits with the exhaust cool.
- Use a supported actuator or flow test to assess injector B’s response, then compare results with the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or poor contact at injector B.
- Clear a confirmed restriction in injector B’s fuel supply path.
- Clean injector B if nozzle deposits are the cause and cleaning is approved by the manufacturer.
- Replace injector B if it sticks, is worn, or fails the specified response test.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle runs normally, limit driving to what is needed for diagnosis because regeneration may be impaired and soot can accumulate in the DPF. Stop and seek prompt attention if smoke or a strong fuel odor occurs during regeneration.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
