OBD-II fault code

P20C9: Reductant Control Module Requested MIL Illumination

What it means

The dedicated reductant/SCR control module has requested that the master PCM illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp — a generic forward of an internal SCR fault. Read the SCR module subcodes for the actual cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant control module manages parts of the SCR system that use DEF to reduce NOx emissions. P20C9 means that module has asked the main powertrain control module to turn on the check-engine light; it is a notification, so the SCR module’s own codes are needed to identify the underlying fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal SCR module fault — read subcodes

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules, especially the reductant/SCR controller, and record its subcodes before clearing anything.
  2. Review freeze-frame data and SCR live data to see what condition was present when the module requested the warning.
  3. Check for accompanying DEF level, quality, heater, pressure, or NOx sensor codes that point to the underlying SCR problem.
  4. Inspect the connectors and wiring relevant to the specific SCR subcodes for loose connections, corrosion, or damage.
  5. Follow the diagnostic tests for the stored SCR subcodes and verify the repair by rescanning the reductant module.

Common fixes

  • Repair the specific wiring or connector fault identified by the SCR module subcodes.
  • Correct a DEF supply, heater, pressure, or sensor fault if the subcodes and tests identify one.
  • Replace or reprogram the reductant control module only if its own diagnostics confirm an internal fault and the manufacturer’s procedure supports it.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives normally, cautious driving may be possible, but the warning can indicate an SCR emissions fault and a DEF or no-start countdown may be active. Check the SCR module’s subcodes promptly and do not ignore a countdown, which can eventually prevent restarting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
