OBD-II fault code

P20C7: Reductant Heater D Control Circuit Low

What it means

This code indicates a low voltage condition in reductant heater D's control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Reductant heater D warms DEF (AdBlue) so it can flow in cold conditions. The control module monitors voltage in heater D’s control circuit and sets P20C7 when the voltage is lower than expected, often because the circuit is shorted to ground or has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and SCR live data for heater D’s command and voltage reading, and check for related heater or supply codes.
  2. With the system cool and powered down as directed by the manufacturer, inspect heater D’s connector and harness for chafing, exposed conductors, corrosion, or pin damage.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check heater D’s control circuit for an unintended path to ground, following the manufacturer’s isolation procedure.
  4. Check connector terminals and circuit connections for corrosion or poor contact that could cause a voltage drop.
  5. If the harness and terminals pass, test heater D and the control-module output against the manufacturer’s specification to identify the source of the low reading.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring chafed through to ground and secure the harness against further rubbing.
  • Clean or replace corroded or damaged heater D connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged sections of the heater D circuit.
  • Replace heater D or repair the module only if testing confirms that component is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle operates normally, cautious driving is generally possible, but heater D may not thaw DEF in cold weather and emissions control may be affected. Do not disregard a no-start countdown, since it can eventually prevent restarting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
