OBD-II fault code

P206B: Reductant Quality Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The reductant quality sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected. This code alone does not establish that the DEF is diluted or out of specification.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant quality sensor measures the urea concentration in the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), also called AdBlue, for the emissions system. P206B sets when the signal is outside its expected range or fails a plausibility check; the code alone does not confirm diluted or incorrect fluid.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. DEF diluted with water
  2. Wrong fluid in DEF tank
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related reductant or NOx codes, then note whether the quality reading is consistently implausible or changes with operating conditions.
  2. Check that the tank contains the correct DEF and look for signs of water or other fluid contamination before concluding the sensor has failed.
  3. Inspect the quality sensor connector and harness for corrosion, fluid ingress, damaged insulation, or loose terminals.
  4. Compare the sensor’s live quality data with other available reductant data and the manufacturer’s diagnostic guidance.
  5. Test the quality sensor circuit and sensor response to distinguish a wiring fault from a sensor that is out of calibration or worn.

Common fixes

  • Correct a confirmed fluid mix-up or contamination using the vehicle maker’s service procedure.
  • Repair a loose, corroded, or fluid-contaminated sensor connection.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the quality sensor circuit.
  • Replace an aged or faulty quality sensor if the fluid and circuit checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but the emissions system may show a DEF quality warning and can start a no-start countdown if the fault persists. Take warning or countdown messages seriously and avoid delaying diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
