OBD-II fault code

P206A: Reductant Quality Sensor

What it means

A general electrical fault is reported on the DEF (urea) quality sensor — measures urea concentration via ultrasonic or refractive method to detect water dilution or wrong fluid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant quality sensor checks the concentration of urea in the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), also called AdBlue, so the emissions system can judge whether the fluid is suitable. P206A indicates a general electrical fault in the sensor circuit; by itself, it does not show whether the fluid quality is wrong.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Harness fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and any related reductant or NOx codes to see when the fault occurred and whether the quality reading disappeared or became implausible.
  2. Check the DEF quality and warning messages on the scan tool, and confirm the tank contains the correct fluid rather than assuming the sensor code proves contamination.
  3. Inspect the quality sensor connector and harness for fluid intrusion, corrosion, loose terminals, or damaged insulation.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor’s power, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, compare the sensor’s live data and functional response with the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose sensor connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals and seal the connector against fluid or water entry.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged section of sensor wiring.
  • Replace the reductant quality sensor if its circuit is sound but its signal remains faulty.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive if the vehicle runs normally, but arrange diagnosis soon because the emissions warning may progress to a DEF warning or a no-start countdown. Do not ignore countdown messages, and avoid relying on the vehicle for a long trip until the fault is understood.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
