OBD-II fault code

P0E7A: Coolant Bypass Valve A Control Stuck Closed

What it means

The coolant bypass valve B reports a performance condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant bypass valve A changes coolant routing in the thermal-management system. The module monitors its commanded operation and system response, and sets P0E7A when valve A is stuck closed instead of opening when required; mechanical sticking or scale in the coolant path can prevent movement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve mechanically stuck
  2. Scale buildup in coolant path

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid system warning light
  • Cabin heating or cooling may be reduced
  • Temperature regulation may be slower

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live valve A command and coolant temperatures to determine when the module expected the valve to open.
  2. Inspect valve A and its connectors for visible damage, loose wiring, or signs of coolant leakage before evaluating mechanical operation.
  3. Use the scan tool’s supported valve command or test, if available, and compare the response with the manufacturer’s procedure.
  4. Check the coolant level and inspect the accessible coolant path for restrictions or scale-related flow problems, following the vehicle’s cooling-system safety instructions.
  5. If electrical control is present but valve A does not respond, test the actuator and valve movement according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Restore the correct coolant level and address any leak that caused it to fall.
  • Clear a confirmed restriction from the valve A coolant path using the manufacturer’s service procedure.
  • Repair a loose or damaged valve A connector or wiring fault.
  • Replace valve A if it is mechanically stuck closed or its actuator has failed.

Can I keep driving?

Keep trips short and avoid heavy loads if the vehicle reports reduced power or a battery or motor temperature warning; a closed valve can impair coolant flow. Stop safely if a temperature warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
