What it means
The high-voltage battery voltage system has an internal isolation fault. The control module sets this code when its monitoring detects an isolation problem associated with battery voltage.
How it works
The vehicle's isolation monitor checks whether the high-voltage battery circuit remains electrically isolated from the vehicle chassis. P0E74 indicates an internal isolation fault associated with the battery voltage system. Damaged cable insulation, moisture or contamination in a high-voltage component, a pack insulation failure, or a monitoring circuit fault can trigger it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Damaged high-voltage cable insulation
- Moisture or contamination in a high-voltage component
- Battery pack insulation failure
- Faulty isolation monitoring circuit
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV warning light
- Vehicle may not enter READY mode
- Charging may be disabled
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related high-voltage codes, and check whether the vehicle reports an isolation warning or blocks Ready mode.
- Do not touch high-voltage components; have a qualified technician follow the manufacturer's high-voltage shutdown and safety procedure before inspection.
- Inspect high-voltage cables, connectors, and accessible components for damaged insulation, moisture, or contamination using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test battery and high-voltage circuit insulation with the specified equipment and compare results with the manufacturer's limits.
- If insulation tests pass, diagnose the isolation monitoring circuit and its connections according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Replace or repair high-voltage cable or connector components with damaged insulation.
- Correct moisture entry or contamination in the affected high-voltage component and replace damaged seals as specified.
- Repair a battery pack insulation fault identified by the manufacturer's test procedure.
- Repair the isolation monitoring circuit if the high-voltage system insulation tests correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Do not drive or charge the vehicle if it displays an isolation or high-voltage safety warning; arrange qualified service or recovery. An isolation fault can create an electric shock risk and may prevent the vehicle from entering Ready mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
