OBD-II fault code

P0D91: Battery Charger Coupler Lock Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The coupler lock control circuit has an open condition. This can prevent the connector from locking or being released, and may interrupt charging.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The coupler lock actuator secures the charging connector in the vehicle inlet while charging is enabled. The charger monitors the lock control circuit and sets P0D91 when it detects an open electrical path, so it may be unable to command the lock to engage or release.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in actuator control wire
  2. Open lock actuator
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and charging data to confirm whether the fault occurs when the vehicle commands the coupler lock to engage or release.
  2. With charging stopped and the connector safely disconnected, inspect the inlet and coupler for damage, debris, or a lock that is visibly obstructed.
  3. Inspect the lock actuator wiring and connectors for a break, loose connection, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  4. Use a scan tool, if supported, to command the coupler lock and check whether the actuator responds.
  5. Test continuity through the lock control wire and actuator circuit using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a loose connector or terminal at the coupler lock circuit.
  • Repair a broken lock actuator control wire.
  • Repair or replace a connector with a pushed-back or damaged pin.
  • Replace the coupler lock actuator if its internal circuit is open.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start or stop unexpectedly, and the connector may not lock or release as intended. Avoid forcing the connector; if it will not release normally, follow the vehicle's manual release instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
