What it means
The positive contactor A of the battery charging system reports a stuck open condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Positive contactor A closes to connect the high-voltage battery charging path when commanded. P0D09 sets when the module detects that this contactor remains open when it should close, so the charging path cannot be established reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Contacts oxidised
- Coil burned out
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light on
- Charging may fail or stop
- Vehicle may not enter or remain in a ready state
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check contactor A command and feedback with a scan tool during a charging or Ready-mode attempt.
- Inspect accessible low-voltage wiring and the contactor connector for loose pins, corrosion, or damage.
- Check the contactor control circuit and coil for continuity or resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
- Compare the commanded contactor state with its feedback to distinguish an open control circuit from contacts that fail to close.
- If the control circuit is sound, have the contactor evaluated or replaced using the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat a loose contactor connector and secure its terminals.
- Repair damaged or corroded control-circuit wiring.
- Replace positive contactor A if its coil or contacts fail the manufacturer's tests.
- Address contamination or contact damage only through the approved contactor service procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may stop or fail, and the vehicle may not enter Ready mode; avoid relying on it until the high-voltage path operates normally. Have high-voltage contactor work performed by a trained technician.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
