OBD-II fault code

P0CF7: Control Pilot Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The control pilot signal (SAE J1772 / IEC 61851 charging) reports a circuit intermittent/erratic condition. EV charging handshake compromised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control pilot carries the signaling between an EV and charging equipment during the charging handshake. This code sets when the pilot signal is intermittent or erratic, often because a loose connection or damaged wire repeatedly interrupts communication.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose or damaged control pilot connection
  2. Damaged wiring causing an intermittent connection

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check charge-status and scan-tool history, noting whether the pilot fault appears when the cable is moved or with a particular EVSE.
  2. Confirm the charging plug is fully seated and check whether the fault repeats with another compatible charging unit.
  3. Inspect the inlet and cable plug for looseness, worn contacts, debris, moisture, or visible damage.
  4. With charging equipment disconnected, inspect accessible pilot wiring and connectors for loose terminals or harness damage.
  5. Monitor or test the pilot circuit for dropouts against the manufacturer's specification while checking the connectors and wiring.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the charging plug.
  • Clean or repair loose or damaged inlet and cable contacts.
  • Repair pilot wiring or terminals that lose contact intermittently.
  • Replace a faulty pilot-circuit component if testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally unaffected, but charging may repeatedly stop or fail, so check the vehicle's range before a trip. Stop using a cable or inlet if movement causes faults or if either shows damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
