What it means
The control module detected an open condition in the drive motor A coolant pump control circuit. Cooling may be affected; the vehicle response depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The drive motor A coolant pump circulates coolant to remove heat from the drive motor. The control module monitors the pump control circuit and sets this code when it detects an open path, so the pump may not run and motor cooling can be reduced.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in pump control wire
- Open pump motor
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data for pump command, coolant temperature, and any related cooling-system codes.
- With the vehicle safely powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the drive motor A pump connector for a loose plug, damaged wiring, corrosion, or a pushed-back pin.
- Check the pump control circuit and connector pin fit for an open using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specification.
- Test the pump motor for an open circuit and verify its power and ground paths as directed by the service procedure.
- If the pump and wiring pass, check the control module output and related control circuit for an open.
Common fixes
- Reseat the pump connector and secure any pushed-back terminal correctly.
- Repair an open or damaged pump control wire.
- Clean or repair poor connector contacts and restore pin retention.
- Replace the drive motor A coolant pump if its motor tests open.
- Repair a faulty module-side output circuit if confirmed by diagnosis.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving under load if the hybrid system reports reduced power or a motor temperature warning; loss of drive motor cooling can lead to overheating and limp mode or shutdown. Stop safely if a warning appears or power drops.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
