What it means
The HV battery precharge contactor circuit reports a generic fault. DC-link precharge before main contactor closure cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The precharge contactor briefly connects the battery through a precharge path so the high-voltage DC link can build up voltage before the main contactors close. P0AE1 indicates a general fault in that precharge-contactor circuit or sequence, so the control module cannot reliably complete precharge. The cause can be in the contactor, its wiring, or a battery condition that disrupts the sequence.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Precharge contactor failed
- Wiring fault
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data for the precharge command, DC-link voltage, and sequence status when the fault occurred.
- With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the precharge-contactor wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, corrosion, or heat marks.
- Check the precharge-contactor coil and control-circuit continuity and resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
- Use a capable scan tool and the vehicle's service procedure to compare DC-link voltage rise with the commanded precharge sequence.
- If the circuit tests pass, review battery cell or block balance data and related battery faults to determine whether pack imbalance is interrupting precharge.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded precharge-contactor connector.
- Repair damaged precharge control wiring.
- Replace the precharge contactor if its coil or operation fails the specified checks.
- Address a confirmed battery imbalance using the vehicle manufacturer's service procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid relying on the vehicle for long trips because reduced power, limp mode, or failure to enter Ready mode can occur. Arrange prompt hybrid-system diagnosis, especially if charging is also failing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
