What it means
The HV battery pack cooling fan 3 reports a control circuit low condition. Battery thermal management is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery cooling fan 3 is controlled through an electrical circuit that lets the hybrid or EV battery system request airflow. This code sets when the fan 3 control circuit signal is below its expected range, which can result from a short to ground or an electrical fault in the fan or connector.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Internal motor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check fan 3 command, battery temperature, and related cooling codes.
- Inspect fan 3's connector and accessible harness for chafing, corrosion, moisture, or damaged terminals.
- Use the wiring diagram to test whether the fan 3 control wire is shorted to ground.
- Test the fan motor and control circuit according to the manufacturer's specification and procedure.
- If the fan circuit passes, check the fan control module or battery control module for a low input or output fault.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose fan 3 connector.
- Repair a fan 3 control wire shorted to ground.
- Replace fan 3 if its motor fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair or replace a confirmed faulty fan control component.
Can I keep driving?
Limit fast charging, heavy loads, and demanding driving because fan 3 may not provide the cooling the battery pack needs. If a temperature warning appears or power is reduced, stop safely and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
