OBD-II fault code

P0AD0: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Cooling Fan 3 Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

The HV battery pack cooling fan 3 reports a performance/stuck off condition. Battery thermal management is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery cooling fan 3 moves air through the hybrid or EV battery pack when cooling is needed. The control system checks whether the fan responds to its command; this code sets when fan 3 is commanded on but does not operate as expected or appears stuck off.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fan motor seized
  2. Fan relay failed
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live fan command and battery temperature readings to confirm when fan 3 should have been running.
  2. Inspect the fan 3 air path and accessible fan area for debris or obstruction, without entering the high-voltage battery enclosure.
  3. Check the fan 3 connector, wiring, and relay or control circuit for damage or a failed connection.
  4. Following the manufacturer's procedure, verify whether fan 3 receives its command and whether the motor turns freely.
  5. If the fan, air path, and circuit pass, check the fan control module and related battery cooling codes.

Common fixes

  • Remove accessible debris obstructing fan 3 or its air path.
  • Repair a loose or damaged fan 3 connector or wire.
  • Replace a failed fan relay or control component.
  • Replace fan 3 if its motor is seized or fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid fast charging, heavy loads, and prolonged demanding driving because a fan that stays off can let the battery pack overheat. Stop safely if a battery temperature warning appears or power drops sharply, and arrange prompt repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
