What it means
The 14V DC/DC converter module reports a "system voltage high" condition. 12V vehicle electrical supply may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The 14-volt power module is the DC/DC converter that supplies the 12-volt system from the high-voltage hybrid battery. It monitors the output it regulates and sets P0A8E when system voltage rises above the expected range, potentially exposing 12-volt components to excessive voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Output regulator overshoots
- Voltage feedback lost
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- 12-volt charging warning light
- Unusually bright or flickering lights
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare live 12-volt voltage with the manufacturer's expected range under the operating conditions when the code set.
- Inspect the converter's voltage-sense and output wiring, grounds, and connectors for loose, corroded, or damaged connections that could give false feedback.
- Check whether unusually bright or flickering lamps and other 12-volt symptoms occur at the same time as the high reading.
- Measure voltage at both the converter output and the 12-volt battery to distinguish a converter regulation issue from a wiring or sensing fault.
- If connections and feedback wiring are sound, test the 14-volt module's regulator against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged voltage-sense and output connections.
- Repair damaged wiring or grounds affecting converter feedback.
- Replace the 14-volt power module if testing confirms its regulator is producing excessive voltage.
- Check for and repair any 12-volt components damaged by sustained overvoltage.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid unnecessary driving and turn off nonessential electrical loads, because excessive charging voltage can damage the 12-volt battery and electrical components. If lights flicker strongly or the vehicle displays a hybrid-system warning, stop safely and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
