What it means
The 14V DC/DC converter module reports a "system voltage low" condition. 12V vehicle electrical supply may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The 14-volt power module is the DC/DC converter that supplies the vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system from the high-voltage hybrid battery. It monitors its output voltage and sets P0A8D when that voltage falls below the expected range, which can leave the 12-volt battery undercharged.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Load exceeds module capacity
- Output regulator low
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- 12-volt charging warning light
- Dim lights
- Weak or discharged 12-volt battery
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live 12-volt system voltage with the vehicle in the operating state specified by the manufacturer to confirm when the low-voltage fault occurs.
- Inspect the 12-volt battery terminals, grounds, and DC/DC converter connections for looseness, corrosion, or damaged wiring that could reduce output at the battery.
- Check the 12-volt battery condition and charging demand, since a weak battery or unusually high electrical load can pull system voltage down.
- Compare converter output at its terminals with voltage at the battery to identify wiring or connection voltage drop.
- If wiring and battery checks pass, have the 14-volt power module’s output regulation and capacity tested to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and tighten corroded or loose 12-volt terminals and grounds.
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connections between the DC/DC converter and 12-volt system.
- Replace a weak 12-volt battery if testing confirms it cannot hold charge.
- Repair or replace the 14-volt power module if its output remains low under the manufacturer's test conditions.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and switch off nonessential electrical loads; low 12-volt supply can cause warning lights, accessory failures, or loss of hybrid operation. Stop somewhere safe if the vehicle reports a hybrid-system fault or electrical systems begin to fail.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
