OBD-II fault code

P0A3E: Generator Inverter Over Temperature

What it means

The generator inverter temperature is above the monitored limit. The code identifies an over-temperature condition; it does not by itself establish the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator inverter controls electrical power flowing between the generator and the hybrid system. The control module monitors its temperature and sets this code when the reported temperature exceeds the monitored limit. The code alone does not tell whether poor cooling, sustained generator load, or another problem caused the heat.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Inverter cooling failure
  2. Sustained high inverter load

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid power
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to check generator inverter temperature, generator load, and any related hybrid or cooling-system codes.
  2. Check whether the temperature reading is plausible before startup and whether it climbs unusually under normal operating conditions.
  3. Inspect the generator inverter cooling circuit for leaks, low coolant where applicable, blocked hoses, and pump or fan operation.
  4. Look over the generator inverter connectors and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or heat damage.
  5. If cooling and wiring are sound, test the temperature-sensing circuit and generator inverter according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a confirmed leak or restriction in the generator inverter cooling circuit.
  • Restore cooling by repairing or replacing a failed pump or fan.
  • Repair damaged or corroded generator inverter connectors or wiring.
  • Replace a temperature sensor or generator inverter only after testing identifies it as faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long high-load trips while hybrid power is reduced, since the vehicle may enter reduced-power mode. Stop safely if a stop warning appears or the vehicle begins losing power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
