OBD-II fault code

P0A3D: Drive Motor B Inverter Over Temperature

What it means

The drive motor B inverter temperature is above the monitored limit. The code identifies an over-temperature condition; it does not by itself establish the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor B's inverter converts high-voltage battery power into controlled current for that motor. The hybrid control system monitors the inverter's reported temperature and sets this code when it exceeds its monitored limit. The code identifies overheating, but does not establish whether cooling failure, sustained load, or another fault caused it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Inverter cooling failure
  2. Sustained high inverter load

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data for Drive Motor B inverter temperature, motor load, and related cooling or inverter codes.
  2. Compare the reported inverter temperature with ambient and other temperature readings before starting, then observe whether it rises unusually quickly.
  3. Inspect the inverter cooling circuit for low coolant where applicable, leaks, restricted hoses, and evidence that the pump or fan is not operating.
  4. Inspect Drive Motor B inverter connectors and nearby harnesses for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
  5. If the cooling system and connections check out, test the temperature sensor and inverter operation using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a confirmed inverter coolant leak or restriction.
  • Restore cooling by repairing or replacing a failed pump or fan.
  • Repair damaged or corroded Drive Motor B inverter wiring and connectors.
  • Replace a faulty temperature sensor or inverter only when testing confirms the failed component.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy loads, hard acceleration, and steep climbs while the warning is active, because overheating can trigger reduced power or shutdown. Stop safely if the vehicle displays a stop warning or loses drive power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
