OBD-II fault code

P0951: Auto Shift Manual Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The auto-shift manual control circuit reports a range/performance condition. Manual mode shift requests cannot be reliably interpreted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The auto-shift manual control circuit lets the driver request shifts, and the control module checks whether its signal falls within an expected range and changes plausibly. P0951 sets when the input is present but its range or behavior does not match the expected pattern, which can result from aged switch contacts or a high-resistance connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contacts aged
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor the manual control input in live data while selecting each available manual shift request.
  2. Check whether the reported input changes smoothly and consistently or lingers near an implausible value.
  3. Inspect the manual control switch connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or wiring damage that could add resistance.
  4. Test circuit continuity and connection resistance using the vehicle wiring information and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test the switch contacts or sensing element for wear that places its signal outside the expected range.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a high-resistance or corroded connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the manual shift control circuit.
  • Replace a worn switch or sensing element that does not produce an in-range signal.
  • Repair a confirmed module input fault.

Can I keep driving?

The transmission may still shift automatically, but manual requests can be delayed or misread. Avoid depending on manual mode in traffic, on steep roads, or when engine braking is needed until the signal is reliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
