What it means
Voltage on the reverse inhibit control circuit is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The reverse inhibit control circuit carries the electrical command used to prevent reverse operation under specified conditions. P088C sets when the monitored circuit signal is below its expected range, which can result from a short to ground, an actuator fault, or a poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Actuator internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live reverse-inhibit command and circuit readings to see when the low signal occurs.
- Inspect the reverse-inhibit actuator connector and harness for chafing, water ingress, corrosion, loose pins, or pin push-back.
- With the vehicle's wiring diagram, check the control wire for an unintended path to ground and check continuity through the circuit.
- Measure the circuit signal while the reverse-inhibit control is commanded and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and connector pass, test the actuator and TCM output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean, dry, and secure corroded or loose actuator-connector pins.
- Repair the reverse-inhibit control wire if it is shorted to ground.
- Replace a faulty reverse-inhibit actuator if its internal circuit fails testing.
- Repair the TCM control output only if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Do not rely on the reverse inhibit function until the fault is diagnosed; follow the owner's guidance for selecting reverse and keep people and objects clear when maneuvering. If shifting becomes erratic or limp mode begins, stop driving and arrange repair.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
