What it means
The TCM detects a deteriorated transmission fluid filter based on differential pressure or flow restriction. Filter change recommended.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission fluid filter screens debris from fluid that the transmission uses for lubrication and hydraulic control. P088A means the TCM has detected restriction or reduced flow consistent with a deteriorated filter, often from accumulated debris or overdue service.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Filter loaded with debris
- Service interval overdue
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review transmission temperature, pressure, and filter-related live data if available to see when the restriction was detected.
- Check the service history and fluid level using the manufacturer's procedure, since overdue service or incorrect fluid level can affect flow.
- Inspect the fluid condition and look for signs of contamination, while following the manufacturer's method for checking it.
- If the vehicle supports it, compare filter differential-pressure or flow readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- If restriction is confirmed, inspect the removed filter and fluid for debris to determine whether the issue is routine loading or an internal wear source.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level with the specified transmission fluid if it is low.
- Replace an overdue or restricted transmission filter and service the fluid as specified for the vehicle.
- Repair any leak that caused low fluid level.
- Investigate internal transmission wear if the filter contains substantial debris or restriction returns.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle shifts normally and no warning behavior worsens, drive gently and arrange prompt service. Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips if shifts become harsh or delayed, since restricted flow can contribute to transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
