What it means
The power input signal to the Transmission Control Module is outside the calibrated tolerance. Supply or wake-up signal drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM power input circuit supplies the module, and its voltage must stay within a calibrated range for reliable operation. P0881 sets when the module sees a supply or wake-up signal that is present but does not behave within its expected range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Supply voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review TCM supply and wake-up readings in live data, checking for values that drift or behave inconsistently.
- Inspect the TCM power connector, battery connections, and grounds for corrosion, loose fit, or signs of heat damage.
- Measure voltage at the TCM power input and wake-up circuit under the fault conditions, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check voltage drop across the power and ground connections under load to identify high-resistance contacts.
- If the supply and wiring test correctly, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to isolate a fault in the TCM power input circuit or module.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure high-resistance battery or TCM connector contacts.
- Repair damaged power, ground, or wake-up wiring.
- Correct a supply-voltage problem in the charging system.
- Repair the TCM power input circuit or replace the module only if testing identifies it as faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum if shifts are delayed, harsh, or inconsistent, and avoid towing or heavy acceleration. A drifting TCM supply can disrupt shift control and may cause the transmission to enter a restricted operating mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
