OBD-II fault code

P0880: TCM Power Input Signal

What it means

The TCM detects an out-of-range supply voltage at its main power input. Battery voltage is too low or too high during operation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) relies on its main power input to operate and manage shifts. P0880 sets when the voltage at that input is outside the module's acceptable range during operation, whether too low or too high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Low battery or alternator fault
  2. Poor TCM ground

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check scan-tool voltage readings when the fault occurred, noting whether the TCM input was low or high.
  2. Inspect the battery terminals, charging connections, TCM power feed, and TCM ground for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Measure battery and charging-system voltage under the conditions described in the freeze frame and compare the results with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Perform voltage-drop checks on the TCM power and ground paths while the circuit is loaded to find a poor connection.
  5. If battery, charging system, wiring, and grounds meet specification, test the TCM power input circuit and module as directed by the manufacturer's service information.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten battery or charging-system connections.
  • Charge or replace a weak battery as needed.
  • Repair a poor TCM ground or damaged power-feed wiring.
  • Repair the charging system if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is harsh or unreliable, limit driving to a safe trip for repair and avoid towing or demanding acceleration. An out-of-range TCM supply can interrupt shift control and lead to worsening drivability or a vehicle that cannot shift normally.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
