OBD-II fault code

P0854: Drive Switch Input Circuit Low

What it means

The drive (D) switch input reports a input circuit low fault. Drive mode selection cannot be reliably detected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The drive switch signals whether the selector is in Drive. This code sets when the control module sees the switch input voltage below its expected range, which can happen if the circuit is grounded or the switch remains closed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to ground
  2. Switch stuck closed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live selector data to confirm whether the module incorrectly reports Drive or fails to follow selector movement.
  2. Inspect the drive switch connector for corrosion or spread pins that could create high resistance, and check the harness for a wire rubbed through to ground.
  3. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test whether the input wire is shorted to ground.
  4. Check whether the drive switch opens and closes as the selector moves, using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the switch and wiring test correctly, check the module-side input and related transmission codes for evidence of a module or connector fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and firmly reconnect corroded drive switch connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
  • Replace a drive switch stuck closed.
  • Repair the affected module connector or circuit if the switch and harness pass testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if the transmission misidentifies Drive, shifts unpredictably, slips, or enters a limited gear mode. A low input can prevent reliable gear recognition and worsen shift problems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
