OBD-II fault code

P0853: Drive Switch Input Circuit

What it means

The drive (D) switch input reports a input circuit fault. Drive mode selection cannot be reliably detected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The drive switch tells the control module when the transmission selector is in Drive. The module monitors the switch input circuit for a fault that prevents it from reliably recognizing the Drive position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contact failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live gear-selection data to see whether the module recognizes Drive when the selector is moved there.
  2. With the vehicle safely secured, move the selector through its positions and note whether the reported input changes consistently.
  3. Inspect the drive switch connector and its wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or chafing.
  4. Check switch operation and circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification, comparing the Drive position with other selector positions.
  5. If the switch and wiring pass, check related transmission-module codes and verify the control module is receiving the switch state.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the drive switch connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection in the drive switch circuit.
  • Replace a failed drive switch.
  • Repair a control-module connection or fault if switch and circuit tests pass.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission shifts normally and Drive is recognized consistently, limit driving to necessary trips and have the fault checked soon. Avoid driving if shifts are delayed, harsh, slipping, or the vehicle cannot reliably select Drive, since unpredictable gear selection can make the vehicle unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
