OBD-II fault code

P06C2: Cylinder 10 Glow Plug Circuit Range or Performance

What it means

The cylinder 10 glow plug circuit is not performing within the expected range. The cause may be the glow plug, its wiring or connections, or the control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The cylinder 10 glow plug supplies heat to help ignite diesel fuel when the engine is cold. The control module checks the cylinder 10 glow plug circuit’s response and sets this code when its performance is outside the range it expects.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty glow plug
  2. Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
  3. Glow plug control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data for the cold-start conditions and compare the cylinder 10 glow plug response with readings for other cylinders.
  2. Visually inspect the cylinder 10 glow plug terminal and harness for corrosion, a loose fit, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Test the cylinder 10 glow plug according to the manufacturer's procedure and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Trace and test the cylinder 10 wiring and connections for continuity or excessive resistance using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. If the glow plug and harness test correctly, check the controller's cylinder 10 circuit and output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and firmly reconnect the cylinder 10 glow plug terminal.
  • Repair any damaged or corroded wiring in the cylinder 10 circuit.
  • Replace the cylinder 10 glow plug if it fails the specified electrical test.
  • Repair the glow plug control circuit if its output or connections fail testing.

Can I keep driving?

If it starts and runs normally, driving is usually possible, though cold starts may become harder and warm-up smoke may increase. Do not keep cranking a cold engine that will not start, as the battery can be discharged; repair the fault before depending on it in freezing conditions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
