OBD-II fault code

P06C1: Cylinder 9 Glow Plug Circuit Range or Performance

What it means

The cylinder 9 glow plug circuit is not performing within the expected range. The cause may be the glow plug, its wiring or connections, or the control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The cylinder 9 glow plug heats its combustion chamber before and during cold operation to support starting and cleaner combustion. The control module monitors the cylinder 9 circuit’s electrical response and stores this code when that response is outside the expected performance range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty glow plug
  2. Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
  3. Glow plug control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and glow plug live data to confirm the conditions when cylinder 9 was flagged and compare its response with the other cylinders.
  2. Inspect the cylinder 9 glow plug connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, melted insulation, or rubbing damage.
  3. Test the cylinder 9 glow plug using the manufacturer's procedure and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check the circuit between the cylinder 9 plug and its control point for continuity and poor connections using the wiring diagram.
  5. If the plug and wiring are sound, test the glow plug controller and its cylinder 9 output as specified by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the cylinder 9 glow plug connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals in the cylinder 9 circuit.
  • Replace the cylinder 9 glow plug if its test result is outside specification.
  • Repair the glow plug controller or its output circuit if testing confirms a fault.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive if the engine starts and runs smoothly, but cold starting may worsen and white smoke during warm-up can increase. Avoid repeated start attempts if it fails to fire, and have the circuit repaired before cold weather makes starting unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
