What it means
A circuit fault on the AdBlue malfunction warning lamp output - regulatory in many regions to alert the driver of NOx aftertreatment problems.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The reductant system uses AdBlue/DEF to help the exhaust aftertreatment reduce NOx emissions, and its malfunction lamp warns the driver when the system detects a problem. This code indicates an electrical fault in the circuit that controls that warning lamp, such as an open or short, rather than confirming a particular reductant-system failure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or short in the malfunction-lamp wiring
- Faulty warning lamp or instrument cluster
- Poor connector contact
- Control module output fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan the engine and aftertreatment modules for related NOx, reductant level, quality, and lamp-control faults.
- Check whether the AdBlue/DEF or NOx warning appears and whether the instrument cluster reports a level, quality, or restart countdown message.
- Inspect the lamp-control wiring and connectors between the controlling module and instrument cluster for loose plugs, corrosion, damaged insulation, or an open circuit.
- Use the wiring diagram and scan-tool output test, where supported, to check whether the module commands the lamp and whether the cluster responds.
- Measure continuity and shorts in the lamp-control circuit using the manufacturer's procedure, then assess the cluster or module output only after wiring and connections check out.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged lamp-control connector.
- Repair an open or shorted section of warning-lamp wiring.
- Repair the instrument-cluster lamp or its relevant circuit if testing identifies it as faulty.
- Repair or replace the controlling module only if its output is confirmed faulty after circuit checks.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain drivable initially, but do not ignore any AdBlue/DEF or NOx warning: some vehicles start a restart countdown that can eventually prevent restarting. Check the displayed messages promptly and address the fault before an emissions inspection or long trip.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
