What it means
The alternator A reports a mechanical performance issue - typically a slipping belt, worn pulley clutch, or seizing rotor that causes the output to lag behind speed.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine or charging control module monitors Generator A, the alternator, and the belt-and-pulley drive that turns its rotor. This code sets when the alternator’s mechanical response does not keep up with the commanded speed, often because the belt slips or an alternator pulley or bearing binds.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Slipping or damaged drive belt
- Worn or seized alternator pulley or bearing
- Alternator mechanical failure
- Pulley misalignment
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and charging-system faults first, then compare commanded generator speed with reported speed or output if the scan tool provides those values.
- With the engine off, inspect the drive belt for damage, looseness, contamination, or incorrect routing, and check pulley alignment.
- Watch the belt and pulleys from a safe distance while the engine runs, listening for squeal or bearing noise and looking for belt slip or pulley wobble.
- With the engine off and key removed, check the alternator pulley and bearing for roughness, binding, or excessive play using the vehicle’s service procedure.
- If the drive turns smoothly, test alternator output and charging-system operation against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a mechanical drive fault from an internal alternator failure.
Common fixes
- Replace a worn, damaged, or slipping drive belt and correct its tension or routing.
- Repair pulley misalignment or replace a damaged tensioner or idler contributing to belt slip.
- Replace a worn or seized alternator pulley or bearing if serviceable.
- Replace the alternator if its rotor or internal mechanical parts are failing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and unnecessary electrical loads; a slipping belt or failing alternator can stop charging and leave the vehicle unable to restart. If the belt is severely damaged, a pulley is wobbling, or the engine overheats, stop driving and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
